Apple TV has set an October debut for “Matchbox The Movie,” bringing Mattel’s long-running miniature car brand to the screen in a bid to build another toy-based franchise for global audiences. The streaming service said the film will begin streaming worldwide on October 9, marking one of its major releases for the second half of the year.

The movie is inspired by Matchbox, the die-cast car line first introduced in the early 1950s and named for its original packaging, which allowed the tiny vehicles to fit inside matchboxes. Apple TV is positioning the film as an action thriller rather than a family animation, signaling a broader approach to adapting legacy toy brands for modern viewers.

The cast includes John Cena, Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris and Arturo Castro. During a press event in Los Angeles, members of the cast spoke about the cultural legacy of Matchbox cars and the appeal of reimagining a familiar childhood product in a contemporary action-adventure setting.

The film follows Sean, a former soldier played by Cena, who is kidnapped and framed after completing a mission and reconnecting with friends. As the story unfolds, the group must work together to clear their names, with the narrative focusing on loyalty and friendship alongside high-speed action. The movie is directed by Sam Hargrave, a former stunt performer known for his work on large-scale action sequences, and is produced in collaboration with Skydance Media.

The project is part of a broader push by Mattel to expand deeper into film and television built around its brands. After the global success of the 2023 “Barbie” movie, Mattel has accelerated plans to translate its intellectual property into entertainment. The company formed Mattel Studios in 2025 by combining its film and television units, aiming to create a steady pipeline of brand-driven projects.

Other Mattel-based films currently in development include an animated “Bob the Builder” feature and a live-action “Masters of the Universe: Chronicles,” inspired by the He-Man franchise and scheduled for theatrical release in June 2026. Matchbox, while less prominent than Barbie or Hot Wheels, has remained a recognizable name across generations, particularly among collectors.

For Apple TV, the release reflects a continued focus on recognizable intellectual property as competition among streaming platforms intensifies. The service has increasingly balanced original storytelling with established brands to attract global audiences, while also investing in prestige television series.

Apple TV’s press presentation also previewed upcoming and returning shows, including the Emmy-nominated series “Shrinking,” as well as new titles such as “Lucky,” “Imperfect Women” and “The Dink.” With “Matchbox The Movie,” the platform is betting that nostalgia combined with a modern action format can deliver the next franchise-ready hit in an increasingly crowded streaming market.
