Leonardo DiCaprio used his social media platforms on Tuesday to deliver a worldwide call for the protection of the Amazon, warning that the future of humanity depends on safeguarding the forest. With COP30 set to take place in Belém next week, the actor urged global leaders to confront the escalating threats facing one of the planet’s most critical ecosystems.
In a message shared with millions of followers, DiCaprio highlighted Brazil’s central role in environmental preservation. He noted that the country holds 60% of the Amazon rainforest — a region he described as “the lungs of the Earth” and an irreplaceable life-support system.
A global spotlight on the Amazon as COP30 begins
DiCaprio stressed that this year’s United Nations climate conference carries immense symbolic and political weight, as it will be the first time a COP summit takes place inside the Amazon itself. He warned that the combination of industrial agriculture, mining, and oil exploration has destroyed vast tracts of forest worldwide, and that the Brazilian Amazon has suffered heavily from decades of unchecked clearing.
He noted that in the last four decades, nearly all deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon came from agricultural expansion. DiCaprio also emphasized the knowledge and leadership of Indigenous peoples, saying they have long demonstrated that protecting nature is “our most powerful weapon” against climate, biodiversity, and human-wellbeing crises.
The actor highlighted work from his conservation organization, Re:wild, which plans to contribute $500 million to a coalition focused on securing legal land rights for Indigenous and forest communities. According to DiCaprio, strengthening those rights is essential for long-term conservation.
In his closing message, he urged political leaders to act with urgency. He said governments must ensure that the communities who defend the forest receive proper resources and support. “Our future depends on this,” he concluded, before limiting comments on his post.
The debate around the Amazon enters COP30 at a moment of growing international pressure. Brazil is expected to showcase new commitments to climate mitigation, while advocates hope the summit will mark a turning point in global conservation efforts.
