If you want to have a strong sense of longing for your youth, you’ve probably been immersing yourself in the BBC’s His Dark Materials adaptation.
His Dark Materials, a fantasy series based on the novels of the same name by Philip Pullman, premiered its third and final season this past weekend on the BBC and HBO. Even though Season 3 just premiered, fans are already asking for Season 4.
His Dark Materials follows Lyra (Dafne Keen), an orphan who lives in a magical realm similar to our own but is oppressed by its ruling Magisterium. The series follows Lyra as she embarks on a mission to free her world alongside her friend Will Parry (Amir Wilson), and has an ensemble cast that also includes Andrew Scott, Ruth Wilson, Kit Connor, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
His Dark Materials season four Release Date
Unfortunately, we still don’t have any information on a premiere date until season four is officially confirmed. Even if another installment is announced, we anticipate a long production time, therefore we won’t be able to view this one until at least 2024.

His Dark Materials season four Storyline
Unfortunately, there has been no confirmation of a fourth season of His Dark Materials, and it’s looking like this one *might* not happen.
One major explanation is that each season of the HDM TV show corresponds to one book in the HDM book trilogy by Philip Pullman. The first two seasons are speculated to be based on the books Northern Lights and The Subtle Knife, while the third is expected to focus on the third and final book, The Amber Spyglass.
We would caution against saying “never.” The creators of the TV adaptation of His Dark Materials may decide to move forward without any more input from the novels in the series. In addition, Philip Pullman wrote a new trilogy set in the same universe as his HDM novels called The Book of Dust.
In La Belle Sauvage, the first book in the Book of Dust series, the events of Northern Lights are preceeded by 12 years. Lyra is now 21 when the events of the second novel, The Hidden Commonwealth, are set. As of right now, there are no firm plans for a third book.
In other words, there’s more than enough fodder for other TV adaptations!
It’s still worth a shot, in our opinion. It’s possible that the producers of the His Dark Materials TV show will decide to press forward without any more input from the novels in the series. In addition, Philip Pullman wrote a new trilogy set in the same universe as the HDM novels called The Book of Dust.
The events of Northern Lights are preceeded by 12 years in the first Book of Dust novel, La Belle Sauvage. On the other hand, the events of The Hidden Commonwealth take place after the events of His Dark Materials, when Lyra is a young adult. As of right now, there are no firm plans for a third book.
Thus, we believe there is a wealth of fodder for more TV adaptations!

His Dark Materials Universe Can Continue with Spin-Offs
Despite the show’s cancellation after season 4, several His Dark Materials prequels and sequels are still possible. Pullman has already written two books on Lyra and Pan, which may serve as the basis for a new series centred on them.
A second novel trilogy, the Book of Dust, continues the story of His Dark Materials’ world. 10 years after the events of the HDM series finale, Lyra’s story continues in the sequel novel. Jane Tranter, the show’s producer, has stated that she is “actually very enthusiastic to pursue The Book of Dust” when asked about the prospect of a spin-off.
Lyra’s on-screen sister Dafne Keen has shown enthusiasm for returning to the role should a spin-off series be developed. In a recent interview, Keen expressed her desire to “play Lyra” for the rest of her life.
Seasons 1-3 of His Dark Materials may be viewed in their entirety on HBO Max. If you want to get the latest information, stay tuned.

How come Pan’s coat is always a different shade? After having a white, lovable face, he transforms into a dark grey mouse. Why?
Daemons, a key story element, don’t choose a permanent appearance until they reach adulthood. The moth form of Pan appears several times, and he also takes the form of a bird. Although though he is technically an arctic ferret, when he gets up north he transforms into a fox. To survive, he transforms into a bobcat-like monster.
