What is Extrapolations about?
Extrapolations, an eight-part series written, directed, and executive produced by Scott Z. Burns, “introduces a near future where the catastrophic repercussions of climate change have become imbedded in our everyday life,” according to the official synopsis.
Eight interconnected stories from around the world will examine the personal, life-altering decisions that must be taken when the earth is changing faster than the population.
“While everyone’s experiences are unique, the struggle to secure our future is not. Before it’s too late, do we have the guts to become the answer to our own demise?”
Burns has noted that “at its core” the show is a thriller. “In any thriller, the stakes are tremendous – the future of life on Earth,” he elaborated. And like other thrillers, there’s a ticking clock, but in our programme, it’s the calendar, marking the monthly increase in temperature, the decades of accumulating carbon, the rising seas, and the quick spread of wildfires.
For this reason, and many others, climate change is a ticking time bomb that affects every part of our existence. Our characters are the time bomb and the heroes seeking to defuse it before it goes off because of human activities on Earth.
Burns added that the show isn’t a traditional anthology because it’s best experienced in order, allowing the lives of the people to be weighed against the impacts of global warming.

Review
AppleTV+ is the only logical home for the expansive, star-studded Extrapolations. A large ensemble like this used to be reserved for blockbuster movies like Earthquake or The Towering Inferno, or for high-profile miniseries on premium cable channels. Streaming services have grown financially to the point where they can afford to consistently bring in A-list actors from around the world to star in original content like Extrapolations.
Extrapolations is an anthology that puts a socially aware message at the heart of its plot by providing a variety of connected chapters that stress the possibility of climate change over the next fifty years. Extrapolations is a singular failure, but the production values and talent involved make it worth seeing at least once for the dramatic highs and lows it achieves in individual episodes.
