Alabama Player Darius Miles is Accused of Capital Murder

Darius Miles, an Alabama men’s basketball team player, and another man have been charged with capital murder in connection with the shooting death of a 23-year-old woman near campus early on Sunday morning.

An official at the Tuscaloosa County Jail told ESPN that Miles was booked at around 6:45 p.m. ET on Sunday. In a statement released on Sunday, the school confirmed rumors that junior reserve forward Miles, a native of Washington, D.C., had been cut from the squad.

Capt. Jack Kennedy of the Tuscaloosa Police Department stated that the shooting happened early on Sunday morning in the Strip off University Boulevard close to campus. Jamea Harris, a resident of the Birmingham area, reportedly died after being shot.

Both Miles (age 21) and Michael Lynn Davis (age 20) of Charles County, Maryland have been charged with first-degree murder. Kennedy explained that this accusation was made because shots had been fired into a car, leading to the death of the driver.

While they were on the Strip, a minor altercation between the suspects and the victim appears to be the only motive at this time, Kennedy said at a press conference on Sunday night. He claimed there was no history between them.

He claimed that at around 1:45 a.m., the driver of another vehicle, in which Harris was a passenger, approached campus police near Bryant-Denny Stadium, saying that someone had shot into the vehicle and the driver had fired back. According to Kennedy, he will not say who fired the gun or who was injured, but he did say that one of the suspects was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening wounds.

Kennedy noted that it appeared that neither Harris nor Davis were students at the university.

It was announced on Monday by Miles’ legal team that he and his family are “heartbroken tonight over the death of Jamea Jonae Harris.”

After Saturday’s game against LSU, Alabama announced that Miles would be out for the rest of the season with an ankle injury. The university issued a statement saying he “has been removed from campus,” and his bio was taken down from the athletics website.

In a brief news conference with reporters on Monday in Tuscaloosa, Alabama head coach Nate Oats said he is constrained in what he can say about Miles.

He began by expressing his sorrow for the loss of Jamea Harris, “a young woman, a daughter, and a mother who was taken away from us too soon in a senseless act.”

“It’s a tragic situation all around. We continue to hold [Harris’ loved ones] in our hearts and prayers as they endure this tragic loss. I have nothing more to contribute at this time because the investigation is still ongoing.”

According to Oats, Miles missed a month of practice while he dealt with a personal challenge, and then he decided to end his season on Saturday, hours before the shooting, because of an ankle injury that had been bothering him for a while.

“He actually went back home to [Washington] to deal with a personal matter and then he had the ankle injury, it was kind of ongoing,” Oats explained. “Unfortunately, he’s had more than one problem. These other events on Sunday morning had nothing to do with the one we’re discussing.”

After hearing the news of the shooting on Sunday morning, Oats said he called the athletic director of Alabama, Greg Byrne, and focused on Harris, her family, and his squad. He stated that the shooting affected him since he has daughters, but he also had to discuss the incident with Miles’ mother.

Oats stated that Miles is the only Alabama team member associated with the shooting. He reported that his team’s Sunday night meeting was filled with “many hugs.”
