Following the revelation of his father’s extramarital affair, Carmichael said he had been “feeling like a liar” in the special, which was filmed in an intimate setting by fellow comedian Bo Burnham at a New York jazz club. For fear that it would alter people’s impressions of him, he kept his true identity hidden from everyone outside of his closest circle of friends, family, and fans.
“I thought I’d never, ever come out,” he said in the special, which airs Friday night. “At many points in my life I thought I’d rather die than confront the truth of that, like, to actually say it to people.”
