A new year means a new winter premiere season, which is identical to the fall premiere season but colder. New network dramas like ABC’s Will Trent and Fox’s Alert rub shoulders with Hulu Originals like How I Met Your Mother on the January list of Hulu additions. Hulu is also investing heavily in docuseries for 2023, with The 1619 Project, an expansion of the New York Times Magazine project of the same name, generating the most buzz.
Looking for the newest additions to Hulu’s movie library? In January, the platform will add the acclaimed 2021 French film Happening, as well as beloved classics such as The Breakfast Club, A League of Their Own, The Mummy, and Heat. You have until the end of the month to stream Mamma Mia!, the Saw films, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Cast Away before they are removed from Hulu.
We’ve compiled our recommendations for what to watch on Hulu in January, as well as lists of everything arriving and departing Hulu during the month.
What’s New on Hulu in January 2023
Koala Man (Jan. 9)
This animated comedy is about an average suburban-dwelling middle-aged father named Kevin, who has no superpowers but wears a mask and fights petty crime anyway. Michael Cusack, who also created Adult Swim’s Smiling Friends, voices Kevin and a number of the other characters. However, don’t overlook the rest of the voice cast, which includes Hugh Jackman as a popular local town councilman named Big Greg; Succession’s Sarah Snook as Kevin’s wife, Vicky; Jemaine Clement as an ineffective school principal; and Miranda Otto as a young koala cub. Every other Australian and New Zealand actor must be envious right now.
Riotsville, U.S.A. (Jan. 12)
In Riotsville, U.S.A., history seems to repeat itself, or perhaps it never ends. This acclaimed 2022 documentary examines the social justice movement of the late 1960s and traces the militarization of American police forces in response. It focuses on Army-constructed fake towns used to train police and the military to violently suppress protests. Sarah Pettengill employs archival footage and pointed narration to tell a story with clear parallels to the present.
Happening (Jan. 22)
What did you mean history repeats itself? The award-winning French drama Happening, which won the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival in 2021, depicts a young woman’s harrowing search for an abortion in France in 1963. Anne (Anamaria Vartolomei), a promising student, has her life upended by an unintended pregnancy, and she is willing to risk prison or worse to preserve the future she once envisioned. It is personal, intense, and sadly, still entirely timely.
Season 2 of How I Met Your Father (Jan. 24)
I watched every single episode of How I Met Your Mother, and despite the profound disappointment of the series finale and the fact that my brain is now fully developed, I still think about certain HIMYM lines (such as “They LIVED the Star Wars”) at least once per month. How I Met Your Father, a spin-off(-ish) starring Hilary Duff, took off in Season 1, despite middling reviews and the aforementioned infamously bad HIMYM finale, attracting a loyal audience and earning renewal. The apartment of Marshall and Lily is that powerful.
Extraordinary Season One (Jan. 25)
Hulu has an abundance of comedies about superpowers this month. Jen, a 25-year-old London resident, is portrayed by Máiréad Tyers in Extraordinary. In this version of London (and the world), everyone receives a special ability on their 18th birthday. Jen, a late bloomer, lacks her ability, so she endeavours to activate it. This one seems amusing! Also starring is Siobhan McSweeney of Derry Girls.
The 1619 Project (Jan. 26)
This six-part documentary series is based on a similar project by The New York Times Magazine and journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones. The 1619 Project, hosted and executive produced by Hannah-Jones, reframes American history with a focus on its origins in slavery, examining how the effects of slavery and the contributions of African Americans have shaped every aspect of American society. Winfrey is one of the producers.
