Once a tennis player, Whitworth switched to golf when he was 14 years old. After training with Hardy Loudermilk, she won the New Mexico State Amateur Championships in 1957 and 1958. When she was 19, she changed to Harvey Penick as her coach and entered the professional league. It was in December of 1958 that she became a member of the LPGA.

Professional Career
In 1962, Whitworth triumphed at the Kelly Girls Open, which was her first tournament victory. After that, in 1985, she won the United Virginia Bank Classic to give her a total of 88 LPGA Tour victories, more than any other player in the history of the sport, women or men.
There were six for major releases. In 1974, she became only the fourth golfer in LPGA history to win the Orange Blossom Classic five times. In the inaugural 1990 Solheim Cup match, she captained the U.S. team. She earned the first million dollars on the LPGA Tour in 1981.
