Davis got his start as an attorney in a modest New York City practise. He left the company for another some time later. After two years, a former coworker at the Harvey Schein company employed him. At age 28, he was promoted to associate counsel at Columbia Records, a division of CBS, and the following year he was named general counsel. Soon after, Goddard Lieberson, president of the group, named him general manager and administrative vice president. After that, CBS established the Columbia-CBS Group, which featured artists from the current generation of rock and folk music.
