On Tuesday, Mersa Marley, grandson of reggae great Bob Marley, was discovered lifeless in a vehicle. He had 31 years of age.
Bob Marley is a legend in the genre of reggae, and his grandson Joseph “Jo Mersa” Marley was well on his way to following in his footsteps until he died tragically on Tuesday.
Who was Jo Mersa Marley’s?
Joseph “Jo Mersa” Marley was a reggae musician from Jamaica who passed away on December 27, 2022. Jo Mersa is the grandson of reggae legend Bob Marley and the son of Stephen Marley. He is also his father’s oldest child and Bob Marley’s second grandchild.
Jo Mersa spent his formative years in Jamaica before to coming to Florida. In 2014, the Jamaica Observer stated that he studied studio engineering at Miami Dade College.
According to Jo at the time, the only challenge was maintaining the high standards associated with the Marley name. My father’s development of significant music has left a lasting impression. I am responsible for living up to it, he said.

What was Jo Mersa Marley’s cause of death?
Radio station WZPP in South Florida reports that Jo Mersa had an asthma attack while driving and tragically passed away. He was suddenly taken from his wife and daughter, and his death has been met with widespread grief and tributes from the artistic and political communities.
In 2014, Jo Mersa made his debut with the publication of his debut EP, Comfortable. He also contributed to one of Morgan Heritage’s albums.
According to the Mayo Clinic, an asthma attack causes an individual’s airways to become dilated and irritated, resulting in difficulty breathing, coughing, and wheezing.
As stated by Healthline, asthma episodes can be dangerous mostly because the patient is not receiving enough oxygen into their lungs and can potentially cease breathing.

According to reports, thirteen out of every one million Americans died from an asthma attack in 2020.
Health Match observed that even though these occurrences are uncommon, they can nonetheless occur if the individual experiencing the attack does not know what to do or is unable to face the circumstance.
In contrast to his grandson, Marley did not perish from the same causes. Instead, the musician died of cancer at age 36 in 1981.
In 1977, he was diagnosed with a malignant melanoma under his toenail.
Doctors recommended that he have his toe amputated, but he declined, citing his religious convictions. And despite his condition, he continued to tour and play until his disease spread to his brain, lungs, and liver.
Jo Mersa had described her musical familial upbringing
Jo Mersa reflected on his upbringing in a musical household in a 2016 interview with Rolling Stone.
He recalled how amazing it was to watch the workers arrive to the house and complete their tasks.
“I would return home and try to do homework, but I’d end up getting distracted and going look in the studio,” he explained. You’d constantly be on the verge of running in and out to check things out.
Stephen Marley, one of Bob Marley’s four children, was the father of Jo Mersa and her nine other siblings. Many members of the Marley family are still actively involved in the music industry and have strong ties to reggae, even though some have chosen other paths.
