The Karate Kid, directed by Harald Zwart in 2010, is a martial arts drama film. It was produced by Jerry Weintraub, James Lassiter, Ken Stovitz, Will Smith, and Jada Pinkett Smith, and features main performances by Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan.
While it may share the same title as the first four Karate Kid movies, this is actually a reimagining of the original 1984 film set in China with a focus on kung fu rather than karate.
The film follows Dre Parker (Jaden Smith), a 12-year-old American boy from Detroit who, together with his mother (Taraji P. Henson), relocates to Beijing, China, and immediately becomes involved with the local bully, Cheng (Zhenwei Wang).
An elderly maintenance guy named Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) turns out to be a kung fu teacher who befriends him and teaches him the art of self-defense.
Christopher Murphey authored the screenplay. James Horner provided the score for the picture. It was made in a joint effort by studios in China, Hong Kong, and Hollywood, USA.
