Naomi Judd’s Autopsy Confirms Suicide; Family Appeals for Privacy
On Friday, an autopsy proved what Naomi Judd’s family had suspected all along: the country music diva had committed suicide.
A member of the Grammy-winning mother-daughter duet The Judds, she passed away on April 30 at the age of 76. On that day, Judd’s daughters Wynonna and Ashley shared the news of their mother’s death on social media.
“There was a tragedy that struck our sisterhood today. Because of her mental instability, we lost our lovely mother “A pair of sisters who frequently use Twitter. “This has completely broken us. We’re going through a period of tremendous sadness, but we take comfort in the knowledge that her popularity among fans was shared by those who knew and loved her.”
Documents obtained by USA TODAY indicate that Judd’s cause of death was established by the Williamson County medical examiner in Tennessee, who noted that Judd had a “message with suicidal overtones” near the scene and a history of anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder.

They also shared information for the 988 Suicide Crisis Lifeline and requested prayers and thoughts for individuals who deal with mental illness and their loved ones.

“The results of the autopsy and toxicology tests confirmed our suspicions. Millions of Americans can identify with the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and bipolar disorder that she was treated for. We haven’t quite recovered from the shock of this tragedy. Her children and widower would want privacy while we grieve her loss.”
Ashley Judd, Judd’s daughter, spoke to Diane Sawyer on the May 12 episode of ABC’s “Good Morning America” and revealed her mother’s cause of death.
According to Ashley Judd’s statement, Naomi “used a firearm,” and the autopsy confirmed this.
That’s the bit of knowledge we don’t feel comfortable disclosing, but we realize we’re in a situation where, if we don’t, someone else will.
The actress also claimed that her mother was “found” by her on the same day.
“Before the autopsy results or the specifics of how she died become public knowledge (a “part of the rumor economy”), my sister and my father have given me the limited authority to speak on their behalf at this early stage. That’s why we’re doing it; otherwise, it’s far too early “the story to Sawyer, she said.
Both Ashley (age 54) and Wynonna (age 58) have spoken out since their mother’s passing, expressing their grief and asking for privacy to absorb it.
A petition to seal Naomi Judd’s death records was submitted by her family in early August. Williamson County Chancery Court is just west of Nashville, and the petition was filed there on behalf of Strickland and her daughters. According to the appeal, releasing the investigation materials, which include video and audio interviews done shortly after Judd’s murder, would inflict “severe pain and irreparable suffering.”
The family also asked that any written or electronic records from the investigation, as well as any video or audio recordings, be kept secret.

The petition states that numerous media outlets, including the Tennessean (which is part of the USA TODAY Network), have requested access to the investigation’s records (such as toxicology and autopsy reports).
The complaint claims that the family cannot keep the toxicology and autopsy results private because they are considered public data under Tennessee’s open records rules.
After submitting the petition, Naomi Judd’s family released a statement calling the day of her death “the most shattering day of our lives.”
“Mental illness ultimately claimed the life of our cherished mother and wife. Our family has attempted to grieve as a unit, in the company of friends and neighbors, and most importantly, in the solitude that everyone who has suffered a loss of a loved one deserves “as they put it
