Disney (DIS) and Universal (CMCSA) fans eagerly await new rides and attractions. Six Flags (SIX) and Cedar Fair (FUN) roller coasters are also significant news.
New theme park rides have large queues in their early months and occasionally years. Universal Orlando Resort began adding theme park attractions in 2010 with the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Islands of Adventure. Similar areas were added to Universal Studios Orlando in 2014 and Universal Hollywood in 2016.
After opening Pandora – The World of Avatar at Disney World’s Animal Kingdom in 2017 and Toy Story Land in Disney Hollywood Studios in 2018, Disney unveiled Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in May 2019 at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., and in August 2019 at Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios.
Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance opened in December 2019 at Hollywood Studios and January 2020 at Disneyland. Without a Lightning Lane entry, guests could wait 1-1/2 to 2 hours to ride.
Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, Calif., which competes with Disneyland Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood, introduced Wonder Woman: Flight of Courage in July. Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio, Texas, also unveiled Dr. Diabolical’s Cliffhanger in July.
SeaWorld San Diego must compete with Disney, Universal, Six Flags, and Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park, Calif. The company’s first theme park, which debuted in San Diego in 1964, will launch Arctic Rescue in spring 2023.
Arctic rescue planning
SeaWorld called Arctic Rescue the West Coast’s longest and fastest straddle coaster. The ride’s snowmobile vehicles go 34, 38, and 40 mph.
Jim Lake, SeaWorld San Diego park president, said the new roller coaster is a wonderful complement to the Wild Arctic display.
The trip teaches tourists about climate change, how it affects Arctic creatures, and what they can do to assist. I believe seeing these animals up close at SeaWorld encourages tourists to conserve them.
The coaster joins Atlantis, Manta, Electric Eel, Tidal Twister, and Emperor at SeaWorld San Diego.
