Adam Sandler and the Safdie Brothers Will Reunite for a New Film

Uncut Gems by the Safdie Brothers will rightfully go down in cinema history, not least because it was the film that cemented Julia Fox as the One True Muse of the Twenty-First Century thus far. But it’s difficult to imagine it happening without Adam Sandler’s Oscar-winning performance as compulsive gambler Howard Ratner.

So it’s exciting news that Sandler will reunite with Josh and Benny Safdie for a new film, which will begin filming late this winter. Yesterday, the actor teased the project while speaking to Vanity Fair about his basketball film Hustle (October 11).

“Once that Safdie Brothers movie starts – and I love those guys – I know we’re going to devote ourselves to working our asses off and making it as good as it can be, and I know that takes a long time,” he says. “So a part of my mind is thinking, ‘Wow, once that movie starts, I’m in deep, and our lives are going to change.'”

If Uncut Gems is any indication, this won’t come as a surprise, but Sandler adds that he and the filmmakers are united by their shared vision. In the interview, he says, “In the end, I know it will be a few months of working toward a goal we all care about.” “We want to do as well as possible.”

Before filming, he also thinks fondly of the fast-paced Uncut Gems shoot, which happened in 2018 — a long time after the idea for the movie was first thought of in 2009. “Man, I remember that whole thing being a lot of fun,” he says. “Getting to know those guys and being with them made me think of the old days, like the early days of Saturday Night Live, when people hung out in groups, went places together, and believed in a project together. I just felt like I had great teammates there.”

The upcoming movie won’t be the first time the three have worked together again since Uncut Gems. In 2020, they also showed a seven-minute short film called Goldman v. Silverman, which was about a fight between two street performers.

At the moment, we don’t know what Sandler and the Safdies’ next project will be or if Josh Safdie will ask Julia Fox to be his artistic inspiration again. There are high hopes.
