Is Raising Kanan a True Story?

The events depicted in Raising Kanan are inspired by real life. It’s connected to the burgeoning “Power” series. It’s the first prequel to the 2014-2020 Starz series “Power,” and the second spin-off of the original.

In a July 2021 interview with Sky News, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson revealed that he and his co-creators drew from his former experience while making ‘Raising Kanan,’ just as they had done with ‘Power,’ another show in the ‘Power’ world in which he plays as the older version of Kanan Stark.

This includes one of the pilot episode’s earliest sequences, in which Raq urges Kanan that he must stand up to his bullies.

The rapper said, “These are true things, like, I truly experienced being roughed up in the park before my mom sent me back to the park, and I just was more terrified of her than the kids in the park, so I went back to fight them instead of dealing with her.” “And you deal with that and it kind of changes your perspective,” she said.

“Like, I’m not going to go back whining to my mother for her to send me back; instead, I’ll just handle it before she finds out that I’m scared or afraid of the other person, so it kind of changed a part of my character in the very early stages.”

During the same interview, Jackson also discussed the sequel’s prequel ideas. Because “the things you go through make you who you are,” he said, “to delve into the prequel on his character is to portray all of his trauma and all of the things that he went through and his experiences that hardened him to the point that he was that guy that we saw at the beginning of ‘Power.'” “So you can see the experiences that shaped him into that,” the author writes.

Jackson and “Power” creator Courtney A. Kemp thought Penn would be a good fit to write the prequel. “My good friend Courtney and my other good friend 50 came to me and were like, ‘Look, we have this idea.’ They basically just said, “We want to do the genesis story of Kanan” (with Goodfellas serving as inspiration; the group dubbed themselves “GoodFellas”) and asked, “What do you think?”

After giving it some thought, I came up with what I believe to be compelling and interesting… Penn told Complex in July 2021 that he found the prospect of writing Kanan’s origin tale “a tough job,” because the character was already so well developed.

From crime to love to family to corruption to racial injustice to social isolation, the show examines many facets of contemporary life. The incorporation of real-world elements into the plot makes “Power Book III: Raising Kanan” that much more compelling.
