“Best Shot” is Allen’s first official song. It came out in early 2018. It was a No. 1 hit on the Billboard Country Airplay chart in 2018, making him the first Black artist to take his debut single to the top of that chart. It was also made into a music video.

In 2019, he worked with Abby Anderson to make a video of a cover of “Shallow” by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. “Bettie James” Allen worked with Noah Cyrus and Brad Paisley on “This Is Us” and “Freedom Was a Highway” for his new EP. In 2022, “Freedom Was a Highway,” the second single from the project, became Allen’s third No. 1 hit and Paisly’s twentieth on Billboard Country Airplay.
Allen became the first Black solo musician to win New Male Artist of the Year at the ACM Awards in 2021. He was named as one of the celebrities who will be dancing on season 30 of Dancing with the Stars.
