Gorillaz’s Complete List of Honors and Nominations
Formed in 1998 by Blur’s Damon Albarn and Tank Girl’s Jamie Hewlett, Gorillaz is a British virtual band that plays music made up by the two artists. Hewlett said he got the concept for the band from watching MTV and said, “You’ll go crazy from watching MTV for too long because it has no real content.
So we came up with the concept of a cartoon group to make a statement about that.” Virtual band Gorillaz features cartoon characters 2D, Murdoc, Noodle, and Russel. They appear in holographic form during concerts and on promotional materials like album covers and posters. Albarn is the sole constant musical contributor to the band’s work, which is typically a collaborative effort amongst other musicians.

A Comprehensive List of Damon Albarn’s Musical Groups!
Blur
To get entry to the student union bar at Goldsmiths College in 1988, Albarn enrolled in a music degree. When this happened, he was playing with Graham Coxon and Dave Rowntree in a band called Circus. In no time at all, Goldsmiths student Alex James had joined the gang. In subsequent years, Circus rebranded as Seymour, and subsequently as Blur.
The band’s first song, “She’s So High,” was released in 1990 after they signed with Food Records. The follow-up song, titled “There’s No Other Way,” did well in the marketplace. After their respective single releases, both songs eventually found their way onto Blur’s 1991 self-titled first album.
In an effort to collect their £60,000 in damages, the group set out on a tour of the United States the following year. As a means of combating homesickness, Albarn and his companions wrote songs about being English.
Because of this, the album “Modern Life is Rubbish” was released in 1993 and was a commercial failure. The 1994 album “Parklife,” which featured the smash song “Girls & Boys,” was significantly more popular.

The Great Escape was Blur’s fourth full-length album, released in 1995. Another huge hit, this one topped the British charts and spawned several more hits like “Country House,” “The Universal,” and “Charmless Man.”
In 1997, Blur released their self-titled fifth studio album, which marked a departure for the band, drawing inspiration from American indie rock. Despite negative reviews, the album reached #1 on the UK charts and produced the hits “Song 2” and “Beetlebum.”
When Blur released “13” in 1999 and “Think Tank” in 2003, both albums went straight to the top of the British album charts. The band broke up owing to bad blood but reunited in 2009 to play Hyde Park in London. When Blur released 2015’s “The Magic Whip,” it was the band’s first album in 12 years.
Gorillaz
Gorillaz, Albarn’s other major band, was formed in 1998 by him and comic book artist Jamie Hewlett. The cartoon group Gorillaz was created to mock the insanity of much contemporary music. Although the album features guest appearances by a wide variety of musicians, Albarn is the only full-time member.
He is the band’s main songwriter, singer, and instrumentalist. The band’s self-titled debut album was released in 2001 and was a huge success. The album featured the top 40 hits “Clint Eastwood” and “19-2000.” The second album by Gorillaz, “Demon Days,” was even more successful than the first.
The singles “Feel Good Inc.,” “Dare,” and “Dirty Harry” all became hits after their 2005 release. Five years later, the record received a Grammy Award nomination. The band’s subsequent releases, “Plastic Beach” and “The Fall,” were both well received.
Humanz, the band’s fifth studio album, was released in 2017 after an absence of seven years. After “The Now Now,” the second half of the “Song Machine” series, “Song Machine, Season Two: Strange Timez,” was released.
