In the 20th century, Amy Grant was one of the pioneering voices who breathed new meaning into contemporary Christian music. She’s also pioneered the Christian movement into the mainstream pop music industry. Her music has become increasingly spiritual over the years, but she’s had her share of success and failure just like any other artist.
Her music is actually lessons in life, resonating with depth, truth, and gentle wisdom. Much of what happened to her during her prime years served as a source of inspiration for the music she wrote. She signed her first recording contract at a young age and found immediate success in the Christian music industry.
During her prime, she made the transition into pop music; while some of her fans were shocked by this, many of her devout Christian followers continued to support her regardless of her musical direction.
In addition to her musical accomplishments, she is also an accomplished author; her memoir, “Mosaic: Pieces of My Life So Far,” is a best-seller. Read on to learn more about this well-known figure.
Amy Grant Early Life and Career
Grant was the fourth of four sisters to be born in Augusta, Georgia. They relocated to Music City in ’67. She is the great-granddaughter of A. M. Burton and Lillie Burton founded the Life and Casualty Insurance Company and are commemorated in the names of Nashville’s Life & Casualty Tower, WLAC Radio, and WLAC-TV.
She has admitted that the Burtons were a major influence on her daughter, beginning with their attendance at the Ashwood Church of Christ in Nashville.
“Written on the road, I was just trying to find solid ground. When you walk by someone & say ‘how you doing?’ sometimes it’s just a phrase you just throw out there but sometimes you have to be brave enough to dive deep…you never know what someone is going through.” xo Amy pic.twitter.com/dusBBJQYh0

The all-girls Harpeth Hall School in Nashville is where Grant performed her first-ever original song, “Mountain Top,” in 1976. Young adult minister Brown Bannister assisted her in creating a demo cassette for her parents.
Bannister was dubbing a copy of the tape when the studio owner, Chris Christian, heard the demo and called Word Records. Five weeks before her sixteenth birthday, he played it for her over the phone and offered her a recording contract.
Brown Bannister produced her first album, Amy Grant, in 1977, and went on to make her next 11 albums as well. Released in 1978, a scant month before her high school graduation, it was a huge deal for her. In late 1978, she performed her first paid concert after having just started her freshman year at Furman.
