David Ortiz Divorce: Are the Couples Are Divorcing After 25 Years of Marriage?

Dominican-American David Américo Ortiz Arias (born November 18, 1975), better known by his nickname “Big Papi,” played in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1997 to 2016, primarily as a designated hitter (DH) and first baseman for the Boston Red Sox of the American League (AL).

Following a relatively unremarkable six years with the Minnesota Twins, Ortiz was a key cog in the Red Sox’s 2004 World Series victory, as well as their 2007 and 2013 titles (the latter of which he was named World Series MVP for).

In his first five years with the team, he hit an average of 41 home runs and drove in 128 runs per season, twice leading the American League in runs batted in, and setting the club record with 54 home runs in 2006. He also finished in the top five of the AL’s Most Valuable Player voting each year.

During his 14 years with the Red Sox, he was the team’s primary designated hitter on ten occasions and a Silver Slugger winner seven times. He is widely considered one of the best DHs of all time.

Eight times he was named the league’s best-designated hitter, and he broke every major league record in the process: home runs (485), RBI (1,569), and hits (2,192). He hit.300 or better seven times in his career and collected 30 home runs and 100 RBI in ten different seasons.

His offensive production dropped from 2008 to 2012, but he rebounded strongly over the next four years, with his best year coming in his final season when he led the American League in doubles, RBI, and slugging percentage and guided his team to the playoffs once more.

At the time of his retirement, Ortiz was tied for ninth in AL history in RBI and ranked sixth in home runs (541), doubles (632), and total bases (1,768). He hit two walk-off home runs in the 2004 playoffs, the first of which clinched the AL Division Series, and is widely considered one of the greatest clutch hitters of all time.

Upon first becoming eligible for induction in 2022, he was unanimously selected for the Baseball Hall of Fame.
