The Tale of Purple Hearts and Its Outline
Luke Morrow and Cassie Salazar are polar opposites of one another in almost every way. Cassie is an intellectual woman who lives in Austin, Texas. She is pursuing a career as a singer-songwriter, and in order to support herself while she is doing so, she works evenings at a bar.
Luke, a new recruit in the Army who is getting ready to report for duty, finds comfort in the regimentation and hierarchy that characterizes the military. But a chance encounter in Cassie’s pub brings about significant change in both of their lives. Cassie has been buried under an overwhelming amount of medical debt ever since she was diagnosed with diabetes.
She strikes a deal with Frankie, an old friend of hers who has recently joined the military, in which she agrees to wed him in exchange for better health insurance and the chance to share the increased salary that comes with having a “family.” Luke, an attractive but aggressive friend, offers to marry Cassie in place of Frankie when Frankie’s proposal is turned down.

Charles Melton was the first choice to play Luke, Cassie’s convenient spouse. The news that Netflix had purchased the film’s distribution rights from Alloy entertainment came in August of 2021. As of the same month, it was said that Nicholas Galitzine would be taking over for Melton as Luke. Soon after, production got underway in the San Diego and Riverside areas.
