Eric Appel will direct Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, a biographical musical comedy film about “Weird Al” Yankovic, from a script he co-wrote with Yankovic. Daniel Radcliffe plays Yankovic in the film. He also stars Evan Rachel Wood, Rainn Wilson, Toby Huss, Julianne Nicholson, and Quinta Brunson.
Since his debut in 1979 with “My Bologna,” Weird Al has won five Grammy Awards for his parody of The Knack’s “My Sharona.” His hilarious interpretations of Madonna and Michael Jackson, Coolio and Miley Cyrus as well as numerous other Billboard-topping tunes have been around for 40 years.
Now, he’s chosen to give his own genesis narrative a parodic slant.
In 2010, Funny or Die aired a sketch that featured a false teaser for a deliciously strange biography called “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.” Thirteen years later, the brilliant comedy is receiving the film treatment it deserves.

In Weird, Quinta Brunson plays Oprah Winfrey. The Al Yankovic Story has a hilarious sequence with Daniel Radcliffe as Al Yankovic in character.
As you might expect from a project including “Weird Al” Yankovic, the idea is far from clear. Weird: The Al Yankovic Story claims to follow its satirical subject from early boyhood (thus the parents) through his early career (hence the Madonna).

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story will take some creative liberties with Al’s origins for the sake of entertainment, merging bits of actual life with pure humor, a departure from the typical biography. With references to “celebrity love affairs” and “famously perverted lifestyle,” Weird: The Al Yankovic Story’s first press release suggested a tongue-in-cheek version of the biopic format.

It’s possible that Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, which premiered exclusively on the Roku Channel, might be viable for a theatrical release, given its strong cast and high level of interest. At the time of this writing, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story has not been scheduled to premiere in cinemas.

According to nerdist Roku is the only way to get your “Weird Al” biopic dose as of now, however, a limited theatrical release may be announced closer to November 4.
