Rocket Science’s May December, directed by Todd Haynes, will star Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore. Todd, famed for films such as Carol and Far From Heaven, will helm the upcoming picture from a script written by Samy Burch and a narrative written by Burch and Alex Mechanik, according to Variety. Rocket Science would further accommodate international sales, which will commence at the Virtual Cannes Market, while UTA Independent Film Group and CAA Media Finance will handle US rights. Portman will play an actress from Hollywood who is going to Maine for a mother, and Moore will be showing her as this woman who was in the middle of a tabloid story 20 years ago after a 23-year-old man relationship.
The family drama was situated twenty years after Gracie Atherton-Yu and her husband, Joe, had an infamous tabloid affair, and so as their daughters are about to graduate from high school. Although Hollywood actress Elizabeth Berry spends time together as a family to get to know Gracie, the character actress will portray in a movie, family relationships collapse under the pressure about the outside glare. Joe, who has never comprehended whatever occurred to him as a child, begins to face the truth of war as an empty-nester at the age of 36. And as Elizabeth and Gracie get to understand each other better, the similarities and differences between the two women continue to appear.
The Camden, Maine-set film has been regarded as “an study of fact, narrative, and the challenges (or impossibility) of fully comprehending some other people.” The family relationships begin to dissolve in the eyes with the outside society as Gracie (Moore) as well as her partner Joe (the younger guy) prepare for their twin girls’ graduations, with Elizabeth (Portman) staying beside them. What drew me in to Samy Burch’s great script was the way it traversed possibly dangerous subject matter with some kind of perceptive care that allowed the characters in the storey to be examined with extraordinary subtlety,” Haynes told Variety.
Regarding the gothic thriller Safe, the 2017 mystery Wonderstruck, and the 2002 period drama Far From Heaven, this is Haynes’ sixth involvement alongside Moore (for that Moore got an Oscar nomination). The Velvet Underground will launch as part of the Cannes Film Festival’s offical section next month.
