Naomi Osaka, a famous Japanese professional tennis player who has been ranked No. 1 by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) and is the first Asian player to hold the top ranking in singles. She is a four-time Grand Slam singles champion and is the reigning champion at the US Open and the Australian Open has decided to withdraw from the French Open, that is very surprising I am sure, and all the tennis fans are disheartened but it’s is advisable to continue reading to know the actual reason why she did what she did.

Naomi Osaka announced on Monday afternoon on Twitter that she will withdraw from the French Open after the organizers had fined her $15,000 because of her decision to skip the press conference. The reason she skipped the press conference was due to her mental health issues as she says that she has been suffering from ‘depression’ and ‘anxiety because of the various questions being asked by the interviewers during the post-match press interviews.

It may sound absurd to you all and you might even say that dealing with the media was a part of her job, but just imagine you in the court playing and giving it your all and still losing by a very very close score. That would be very sad and disheartening for you because after trying so hard when you don’t achieve what you want to it can sometimes be demoralizing too. Everyone knows about the fact that in a game one will lose and one will win but that doesn’t mean that you end up demoralizing the losing candidate and make them feel worse.

Like Naomi stated that ‘I believe that the whole situation is kicking a person while they’re down, and I don’t understand the reasoning behind it,’ but still many people fail to understand this as they are not in Naomi’s shoes. She had chosen to withdraw only after Roland Garros, the organizer of the French Open had announced that she would be fined for not attending a ‘mandatory press conference on Sunday morning’ although she had already announced on Twitter last week that she would not do any press conferences during the open because she felt that the questions they ask were brutal for athletes’ mental health, and even cited instances of athletes who broke down in the press room after they faced a tough loss. But they constantly failed to understand that Naomi had a valid point for not attending it.

So when she didn’t show up at the Sunday press conference, organizers of the four Grand Slams said in a statement that “a core element of the Grand Slam regulations is the responsibility of the players to engage with the media, whatever the result of their match.” They had even warned her that if she kept on skipping her press conferences then she could receive additional fines, and even face a suspension from the Paris tournament and even future Grand Slam tournament suspensions. Due to which she felt threatened and chose to withdraw herself.

However, her announcement also had an outpour of help coming from all the players all over the world and even celebrities who chose to stand with her in her time of need. Like Serene Williams, who is currently in the French Open, stated ‘Everyone seems to be totally different and everybody handles issues in another way. You simply must let her deal with it the way in which she needs to and the easiest way she thinks she will. That is the one factor I can say: I believe she is doing the most effective she will.’ providing support for Naomi Osaka.  Even Tennis star Martina Navratilova wrote on Twitter ‘As athletes we’re taught to care for our physique, and maybe the psychological & emotional facet will get quick shrift. That is about greater than doing or not doing a press convention. Good luck Naomi- we’re all pulling for you!’ and many other legends like Billie Jean King, democratic New York consultant Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Olympian Laurie Hernandez, NBA star Stephen Curry, basketball star Lisa Leslie, actor Bradley Whitford, filmmaker Ava DuVernay and the list just keeps going on as she continues to receive all the love and support from people who can understand how important the topic of mental health. Because we tend to ignore mental health issues and most people try and avoid talking about it too but it is important that we talk about our mental health and prioritize it because if we don’t it will later be a thorn in our path of success.  So it is equally important for her to take her own time out to deal with her psychological issues because that is very much needed and we all should understand that and support her in her time of need instead of saying that ‘dealing with the media is a part of her job’. So that when she returns she will return with a bang and in better shape, which will be more joyous for you all as tennis fans and even for her as a tennis player.
