Shazam! Fury of the Gods: Lucy Liu To Play Villain ‘Kalypso’ In The Upcoming Movie
Lucy Liu has been cast as the antagonist in the upcoming Shazam! Fury of the Gods. New Line and DC announced this on Monday.
The character Lucy Liu will be playing is of villainous Kalypso. Kalypso is the second daughter of Atlas, and sister of Hespera. Hespera is played by well-known performer Hellen Mirren.
Interestingly, Kalypso and Hespera have not been featured in the actual DC comics. Notably, movie makers took these characters from Greek mythology.
Both of them are daughters of Atlas, and he is the Greek God. Also, Atlas is one of the sources of Shazam’s powers. Undoubtedly, our superhero is very powerful, evidence of which is in his name, acronym ‘SHAZAM’. S stands for the Wisdom of Solomon. H is for the strength of Hercules. A means the stamina of Atlas. Z for the power of Zeus. A stands for the courage of Achilles (as per ancient mythology this includes invulnerability.) Finally, M stands for the speed of Mercury.
Reportedly, adding to Liu and Mirren’s roles, newcomer Rachel Zegler will be playing a ‘key role’.
The interesting story of ‘Shazam’
Not many people are aware of the fact that Shazam was formerly known as ‘Captain Marvel’. Then, some controversies happened, as a result, the DC Universe’s character was renamed Shazam. This newly formed character was re-introduced in Justice League. (Volume 2) #7.
Our protagonist is Billy Batson, the chosen one, he became a superhero because of the Wizard Shazam. Therefore, whenever Billy utters ‘Shazam’, he is struck by a magical phenomenon, resulting in his transformation into a powerful superhero, the one and only, ‘Shazam’.
Billy has a disturbing background, his parents were killed his sister got kidnapped by Black Adam, in Egypt. Billy got separated from her sister, Mary, as a result, he used to live with his uncle. Now, his uncle was not an angelic person either. He threw Billy out of his house, stealing all his funds. We have a young Billy, roaming around, homeless, without someone to look after him. He slept on subways, did a newsboy’s job, without knowing what destiny has in store for him.
One night, he met a stranger. Long story short, who took him to Wizard Shazam, and there Billy received the news of being selected as the power of ‘good’ in this world. Later, Wizard Shazam died, a block fell on him, maybe by magic, maybe not. Who knows?
Then our superhero joins the Justice Society of America and became what he’s known for.

As of now, fans are waiting to watch the upcoming Shazam! Fury of Gods. The reason being, Shazam has an interesting element of humor, which is quite unconventional for most of DC’s productions.
People are also waiting for the upcoming Black Adam. The role of Black Adam will be played by Dwayne Johnson. It was announced recently by The Rock that he started working for Jaume Collet-Serra’s Black Adam.
As per the recent reports, Black Adam is expected to release in summer 2022. Shazam! Fury of the Gods will be coming in June 2023.
