The Journey of Prince Philip

The journey of the Duke of Edinburgh has not been an easy one. Till the last day, he had a smile on his face despite the struggles and hardships he faced in his life. His story of sacrifices and difficulties is unknown to many. Born in 1921, on a small Greek island, succeeding the thrones of Greece and Denmark. His uncle renounced the throne, as a result, his family fled to France.

Later on, his mother was diagnosed with some psychological ailment and his father moved away from them. He had a traumatic childhood. However, he didn’t let any of this be an obstacle to his growth. During his adulthood, he lost his guardians, brothers, and sisters, still, he kept going.

Young Philip was always a smart person. He was generous, polite, and good to others. These qualities helped him to graduate and join Royal Naval College. He became one of the youngest lieutenants in the Royal Navy.

In 1939, Philip and Elizabeth met. In 1946, he asked Elizabeth’s father for her hand. But it was not an easy phase as initially, he received backlash because of his status. Things started sorting out but he had to give up his Royal titles, religion, and lineage. Even after his marriage, life was not fair to him. After King George’s demise, the new Queen didn’t take her husband’s last name. She continued as a Windsor.

He occupied himself with charity work up until his death. His inclinations were towards environment protection and wildlife conservation. Undeniably, he was a man with a noble purpose and he will be missed.

“We give thanks, as a nation and a kingdom, for the extraordinary life and work of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” Prime Minister Boris Johnson said.

Johnson also added that Philips has earned the “affections of generations” at home, in the Commonwealth, and across the globe through his service in the Navy and by standing strong beside the Queen.

Leaders all over the world including US President, Joe Biden, paid tribute to Prince Philips for his selfless service for Britain and its people.

In a statement, Biden said, “From his service during World War II, to his 73 years alongside the Queen, and his entire life in the public eye — Prince Philip gladly dedicated himself to the people of the UK, the Commonwealth, and to his family.”
