Reportedly, Apple is working on a new and improved design for Apple Watch, featuring a distinctive wrap-around flexible display. There is more to this watch, it will have a rounded watch face and digitally-customized watch band.
According to MacRumors, a patent with the title “Display Module and System Applications” was filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office. MacRumors is a website that focuses on Mac and Apple-related news, rumors, and reports.
The document lays out details regarding the revolutionary flexible display and how it could span the entire watch face. The band of the new Apple Watch is also an addition to the pre-existing classic design.
It is believed that the elongated display is flexible enough and it will be in line with the user’s arm shape to fit like a normal watchband.
As per the diagrams provided in the patent, most probably, this watch’s design is different compared to previous Apple watches.
Furthermore, Apple explains that the design includes a display with a “plurality of interconnects” extending “through the display substrate from the front surface to the back surface and an array of LEDs are in the display area and electrically connected with the plurality of interconnects.” (Source: MacRumors)
A battery, processor, ambient light sensor, and other important elements of a smartwatch can be easily fixed at the large display unit’s back.
Apple is continuing to lead the smartwatch industry as its devices are getting more and more sophisticated.
According to tech reviewers, advancement like this in the smartwatch was anticipated. Last year, we witnessed two patents.
One of them was for a smartwatch band with embedded batteries and the other one focused on a hidden camera and a flash.
Taking a step further, through an amalgamation of creativity and technology, Apple is again coming with a bang by creating a way for digital wrist bands with customizable designs.
According to the patent, Apple provides details regarding the measurement, says, “In accordance with embodiments of the invention, a bezel width surrounding the display panel can be minimized, for example below 4-5 mm or even less than 1 mm, less than 0.5 mm, or eliminated. Thus, the bezel design of the smartwatch can be designed for aesthetic concerns rather than as a requirement for allocating space for a contact ledge.”
This is actually an extraordinary idea, although it is just a patent till now, so there’s no confirmation regarding whether the project will actualize or not. Regardless, Apple Watch is now one of the most popular products in the global market.
According to data presented by Counterpoint Research, in 2020, Global smartwatch shipments dipped slightly in the fourth quarter due to a fresh wave of Covid-19 outbreaks, resulting in a nearly flat full year. But, compared to the same period a year earlier, Apple managed to grow its market share by six percent and solidified its position as one of the best smartwatch manufacturers.
Samsung, Fitbit, and Huawei are some major players in the smartwatch market. Although, this new patent will spice things up and will force competitors of Apple to deliver more.
