Henry Cavill has been removed from the role of Superman after new DC Studios executives decided they did not want to cast him as the legendary superhero in their upcoming film.
James Gunn, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy and the new co-chairman of DC Studios, is writing a Superman film that will not feature the actor Henry Cavill, who said it was “not the easiest news” after just announcing his return to the character.
Who is Henry Cavill?
Henry William Dalgliesh Cavill is a British actor. He was born on May 5, 1983, and his name sounds like “KAV-l.” He is known for playing Charles Brandon in Showtime’s The Tudors (2007–2010), DC Comics character Superman in the DC Extended Universe (2013–2022), Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s fantasy series The Witcher (2019–2023), and Sherlock Holmes in Netflix’s Enola Holmes (2020) and its sequel (2022).

Despite Superman’s Exit and Fan Demand, Henry Cavill Will Not Return to ‘The Witcher’
Despite the fact that Henry Cavill’s tenure as Superman is ended, you won’t see him returning to “The Witcher” on Netflix anytime soon. According to Variety, Liam Hemsworth will continue to play Geralt of Rivia in the upcoming fourth season of “The Witcher.” After three seasons in the role, Cavill announced in October that he will be leaving the show to reprise his role as Superman in Warner Bros.’ DC Universe. Fans of Cavill’s “The Witcher” series were left wondering if he would return now that his “Superman” stint had ended. It won’t be like that at all.
In the “Black Adam” end credit scene, Cavill reprised his role as Superman. In November, when James Gunn and Peter Safran assumed control of DC Studios, the proposal for a new Superman film starring Henry Cavill and produced by Charles Roven was scrapped. The two are redesigning the DC Universe, beginning with a new Superman film written by Gunn in which Cavill will not star.
Gunn said on Twitter on December 15: “Peter and I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be happier about; we’ll be able to share exciting details about our first projects at the start of the new year.”
“Among the candidates is Superman. In the beginning, our story will focus on an earlier period in Superman’s life, thus Henry Cavill will not portray the character. But we just had a fantastic meeting with Henry, of whom we are huge admirers, and we discussed a lot of potential future collaboration opportunities.”

According to sources cited by Variety, Gunn’s screenplay will centre on Superman’s life as a young reporter in the fictitious city of Metropolis. He will interact with important personalities, such as his coworker Lois Lane. Because Gunn’s Superman is younger than Cavill’s, he was never a candidate for the job.
“The news is sad, everyone. “I will not return as Superman,” Cavill stated on Instagram following the announcement. “After been instructed by the studio to announce my comeback in October, prior to their hiring, this is unfortunate news, but such is life. I appreciate that James and Peter are constructing a cosmos. I wish them and everyone engaged with the new universe the best of luck and prosperity.”
Fans of “The Witcher” were disappointed when Cavill announced his departure and the series declared that Liam Hemsworth will assume the role. Peter Friedlander, president of scripted programming for Netflix in the United States and Canada, told fans in an interview with Variety that Chris Hemsworth was the best choice.
“Henry is an exceptional Geralt, and I believe Liam will also continue to be an exceptional Geralt,” Friedlander added. “There is a legacy of incredible, legendary characters whose actors have changed, and we are quite hopeful about this.” We will continue to respect the IP, the fans, and the narrative throughout.”
