The film follows Dre Parker (Jaden Smith), a 12-year-old American boy from Detroit who, together with his mother (Taraji P. Henson), relocates to Beijing, China, and immediately becomes involved with the local bully, Cheng (Zhenwei Wang).

An elderly maintenance guy named Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) turns out to be a kung fu teacher who befriends him and teaches him the art of self-defense.

Christopher Murphey authored the screenplay. James Horner provided the score for the picture. It was made in a joint effort by studios in China, Hong Kong, and Hollywood, USA.
