Armageddon Movie Plot
Paul Graff befriends Johnny, a rebellious African-American, on his first day of 6th grade in 1980 Queens, New York. Johnny was held back a year and gets tougher treatment when they both laugh in class. Paul avoids academics by drawing pictures.
Paul’s Jewish family is financially stable. His grandfather Aaron Rabinowitz urges him to become an artist. Esther and Irving are less optimistic about Paul’s art career.
Aaron tells Paul how his mother escaped antisemitic persecution in Ukraine, fled to London, and then immigrated to the U.S.
Paul and Johnny smoke marijuana in the lavatories without knowing it’s forbidden. Esther orders Irving to beat Paul. Paul’s parents send him to a private school where his older brother Ted is enrolled. After Paul’s expulsion, Johnny quits school.
Fred Trump, who backs Ronald Reagan for president, funds Paul’s private school. On Paul’s first day, his famous daughter Maryanne speaks to the students about working hard.
Paul sees the school’s advantages but doesn’t feel welcome. Paul is frightened by racist comments from other students when Johnny meets him outside. Johnny moves into Paul’s clubhouse to avoid living with his ailing grandmother.
Paul tells Aaron in the park how he does nothing when other pupils are racist. Aaron encourages Paul to speak out against prejudice, telling him that despite covert antisemitism, he and his family are white. Aaron dies of bone cancer, and his family mourns.
Paul gets Johnny to take a computer from school and sell it for money so they may run away together. Police arrest them for selling the stolen computer.
Paul acknowledges that protecting Johnny was his idea during interrogation. Johnny bears the blame for letting Paul depart, much to Paul’s dismay. Paul and Johnny say goodbye as Irving arrives to take Johnny home without penalties.
Irving tells Paul he understands his unhappiness with America’s racial inequity, but they must survive to have a nice life. Esther is still mourning her father’s death, so they agree not to tell her.
Paul is focused on their studies as his family is saddened by Reagan’s triumph. Fred Trump gives a speech about American virtues at a school Thanksgiving dance, prompting Paul to leave unceremoniously.
